A domain is your internet address. Some examples of domains are: google.com, mycompany.cl, myservice.com.mx, etc.
Now, why is it MANDATORY to own a domain if I want to have email accounts or a website?

The answer is simple: if we don't own a domain, we can't add services to it, such as email, websites, or hosting. The domain is the most important thing for our business or service; it's the starting point, since it's how people will remember us and it's also part of our brand.

If you don't own the domain, you CANNOT USE EMAILS OR WEBSITES. But why?

It's a very simple logic. Let's say you sign up for an email service for the domain google.com.
While you can sign up for an email service for that domain, will you be able to use emails with that domain? The answer is, NO. Why? Because the domain google.com is already owned by someone else, it's that simple. That domain is occupied and protected so no one else can use it.

This is how domains work, allowing only you and no one else to use the services that your business or company needs.

Recommendation: When you purchase your domain, try to keep it as simple, short, and clear as possible, as this will make it easier for your customers to remember.
